Pentagon Looks to Directed-Energy Weapons

This sounds a bit scary to me. And I'm really curious why someone would volunteer to be a test subject for these things.

the answer to why people volunteer for stuff like that:
True story: My dad works at Agilent (used to be part of HP). One summer, I worked there as an intern and some of the people in the group next to mine were testing new needles. They were wondering if I wanted to be a test subject for something they called a "pain test". I said something like: "No way! Who the heck would sign up for those anyway?". and there answer was: "well actually, a lot of people do. Your dad has come in 3 or 4 times already. We feed them chocolate". So I went and confirmed with my dad and his response was "You should sign up! The chocolate is very good!"
You can bribe people to do all sorts of crazy stuff with chocolate.

LOL. It won't work with the energy weapons, though. They'd melt the chocolate.

Huh. It would take a lot of chocolate to make me want to be a subject of a new military weapon.
