Going Nuclear

Patrick Moore's editorial in the Washington Post that Going Nuclear should be a key part of the environmentalist platform.

I agree wholeheartedly. We should be falling all over ourselves to build new nuclear plants.

One of my major complaints about the environmental movement today is that it never seems to articulate a method for approaching energy policy in the near term that doesn't involve widly unrealistic expectations (i.e. that solar and wind energy will magically supply all our needs) or that doesn't involve significant cutbacks in energy demand, which are both unrealistic and economically disasterous. Nuclear is the only viable near-term solution.

Absolutely. Nuclear power is the only cost-effective form of clean energy implementable on a large scale at the moment.

There was an article in a recent issue of Scientific American discussing new nuclear technology developments. The newest reactors will be able to produce energy from other radioactive elements besides uranium and plutonium and will be able to deal with the latter in sufficiently low enrichment to be useless for nuclear weapons.
