Yes, but at what cost? What is NASA killing/underfunding to save Hubble, and what are the scientific trade-offs in doing so?

Even before this decision, there were other very large expenses (Shuttle return to flight, ISS, JWST, VSE) that were already causing big cuts for other science at NASA.

Yes, HST is expensive, but it's not obvious where that money will come from. So I'm not sure whether this will be a net plus or minus for science in the long run.

Hubble has great PR value for NASA and astronomy apart from its scientific value, though. Nothing makes the tax-paying public feel better about spending on science than some killer pictures that can be used as desktop backgrounds.
