Save the chocolate!

I just saw this on the Ph.D. comic blog:
Hershey and some other chocolate manufacturers are trying to get the FDA to change their rules so that they can use vegetable oil instead of cacao butter or milk fats and still call it chocolate! This is terrible!!! They already have an FDA approved name for things like that they are called Made with Chocolate or Chocolatey or Chocolate Flavored. There's a reason those things aren't just called chocolate...

Anyway, there's a group that's organizing protests to the FDA called Don't Mess With Our Chocolate.

I feel the need for a fact-finding mission. Perhaps we should convince some of the premium chocolate makers to hold some "informational" tastings...

It's not a surprise that one supporter of the change is Hershey, maker of crap chocolate, nor is it a surprise that See's Candies, a decent chocolatier (at least by American standards), opposes it.

Didn't the French have a debate about this years ago, relating to cheap imitation British chocolate?

Given that Hershey recently bought Sharfen Berger and claim to be trying to cultivate a US market for high end choclate, I would have hoped that Hershey would want to differentiate cheap stuff with high quality products. I still continue my plan of stockpiling Scharfen Berger chocolate in case Hershey messes it up.
